Crestlink (formerly Kimberley Technology Solutions)
Crestlink is here to support big goals, while caring for the marine ecosystems and communities of this remote part of the world.
Advantages
- Reductions in hourly operational expenditure and fleet costs
- Potential for direct shipping and cross-docking
- Reduced marine gas oil (MGO) consumption
- Highest payload for offshore flights
- Reduces scope 3 GHG emissions
- Improved safety of personnel, during high-risk events
Strategic Location
Crestlink Cockatoo Island offers unparalleled sustainable strategic advantages for positioning an aerodrome and deepwater port facilities. The facility will provide fuel, water and cargo services to marine vessels, as well as facilitate crew change and waste disposal.
- 250km from Broome, or 10 hours steaming.
- Approximately 5.6 km from the Australian mainland.
- Four days steaming from Singapore and Fremantle.
- The closest alternative airfield to the Browse Basin.
- Sheltered conditions for mooring in Yampi sound during cyclone events.
- Accommodates services requiring land-backed infrastructure.

Capabilities
The offshore basins of Australia’s vast North West region are far from established infrastructure, and existing supply chains for oil and gas operations are some of the longest in the world.
With infrastructure located close to operational fields, the Crestlink Cockatoo Island supply and support base would maximise fuel and load holding capacity, as well as reduce risks and time taken for de-manning/re-manning events.
The Australian offshore oil and gas industry will require more than A$50 billion of decommissioning work to be done over the next 50 years, half of which needs to be started in the next decade, with a significant portion situated in basins nearby to Cockatoo Island.
The aerodrome alone has the potential to deliver A$4.8 billion in gross savings to both the existing and planned offshore gas field projects on a standalone basis over 20 years.
With more than 1,100 kilometres of coastline between Broome and Port Hedland, Australia’s North West needs greater capabilities to monitor illicit activities within natural maritime reserves and protect critical trade routes with safe havens for ships of all sizes.
Crestlink Cockatoo Island will provide the ideal location to refuel, cargo, and crew change in a secure, deep-water location, as well as deploy crewed, UMV & UAV monitoring.
As an island support base, halting climate change and rising sea levels is front of mind for Crestlink. The strategic location of Cockatoo Island allows for optimised travel routes to reduce carbon emissions from transport, while maintaining healthy marine life in the area.
Project estimates that a single Browse oil and gas operator can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 453,000 tCO2e over 20 years.
Project Milestones
Phased development of the Cockatoo Island supply base provides significant upside potential.
The proposal of this initial $100 million development of the Cockatoo Island supply base was given major project status from the WA government in 2019, with JTSI appointed as the lead agency.

Deep water port key benefits
Current ports that are of practical use for Browse basin production facilities are at the far limit of efficient marine vessel operations. Cockatoo Island’s location & geography provide unrivalled competitive advantages for the oil & gas industry and maritime border security endeavours.
- Reducing steam time to and from offshore operations
- Geography that allows quayside and near-quayside access for the deepest draught vessels.
- Sheltered bay location — no breakwater needed.
- Rapid turnaround in emergencies such as cyclone alerts.
- Integrated with mainland facilities in Broome and Derby.
- Enables development of significant fuel storage and subsea/hi-tech facilities.
Aerodrome key benefits
An average of two real and one false cyclone events in the North West each year typically shutdown offshore rigs for 6-9 days each. This duration can be reduced by an estimated 40% by leveraging Cockatoo Island’s strategic location.
Reduced travel time to offshore facilities enables more effective Search and Rescue (SAR) via shorter response time, offering critical health & safety advantages.
For a single oil and gas operator in Browse, the aerodrome has the potential to deliver and estimated A$1.7 billion in gross savings over 20 years. This can be realised through reduced airframe requirements to transport personnel in de-manning and re-manning.
- Reduces overall pax-km-h by approximately 60%
- Reduces overall aircraft travel time by approximately 40%
- Reduces overall aircraft distance travelled by approximately 35%
